Some of the world’s oldest musical traditions are still alive today. The beautiful sound of the Philippine kulintang is one of them.
Transcript:
The first time I heard this beautiful sound, I had no idea I was listening to one of the Philippines’ oldest musical traditions.
It was unlike anything I’d ever heard before.
While exploring traditional Filipino music, I discovered the kulintang.
It’s a beautiful set of small bronze gongs arranged in a row and played with wooden beaters.
For centuries, communities across Mindanao have used its music during celebrations, ceremonies and important community gatherings.
What surprised me most was the sound itself.
It doesn’t feel rushed. Each note seems to have room to breathe. The music feels peaceful, hypnotic and timeless.
Long before concert stages and streaming playlists, music was already bringing people together.
The kulintang reminds us that music has always been about more than entertainment.
It’s about community, tradition and sharing important moments together.
I’m Tess with JRok Music.
I’d love to hear the kulintang performed in person someday.
I’ll see you in the next story.
