Sometimes the best musical discoveries happen when you’re not looking for them. That’s exactly how I came across one of Korea’s most energetic young guitarists, MEMI.
Transcript:
You know when you’re scrolling Instagram and something completely unexpected makes you stop?
One evening I came across an Instagram page called “Korean Restaurant.”
I expected food, but instead I discovered an energetic young guitarist named MEMI.
MEMI originally began posting videos online simply because she enjoyed playing guitar and sharing music.
She wasn’t trying to become famous.
Then one morning something amazing happened.
Her audience quickly grew past one hundred thousand followers.
Today, more than half a million people follow her musical journey.
One of the things that immediately caught my attention was her personality.
She’s an excellent guitarist, writes and performs her own music, and never seems afraid to have fun.
Even the title of one of her best-known songs, “Where’s My Guitar Pick?”, tells you a little about her sense of humour and her music reflects that same passion, energy and raw rock attitude.
AS her music posts continued to climb in popularity, MEMI took it to the stage and arranged and promoted her own shows. And honestly, those shows were fire!
With that momentum building, offers from larger entertainment companies started coming her way, but MEMI decided to stay independent because she wanted to remain true to herself and her music.
Eventually, she shared that doing everything by herself was becoming increasingly difficult, so she joined a smaller agency that felt like the right fit instead.
I really admired that decision.
What I enjoy most is that even with hundreds of thousands of followers, she still feels like someone who’s simply having fun making music.
I have a feeling we’re going to be hearing a lot more from MEMI in the years ahead.
I can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next.
I’m Tess with JRok Music.
Now, where’s my guitar pick?
Keep rocking! and I’ll see you in the next story.
