Most people think of Chiang Mai for its ancient temples and mountain scenery, but I discovered another side of the city—a place where traditional music and modern live performances blend together almost everywhere you go.
Transcript:
When people talk about Chiang Mai, they usually mention the temples.
But the more I explored the city, the more I realized something.
Music is everywhere.
You might hear the gentle sound of temple bells during the day, or traditional Thai musicians performing while people enjoy dinner at a beautiful local restaurant.
Then just a few streets away, everything changes.
Around Chiang Mai University, especially in the Nimmanhaemin area, cafés, restaurants and small bars are filled with students enjoying live music almost every night.
Over in Si Phum, the Old City comes alive after dark. Places like Zoe in Yellow attract locals and travelers looking for live bands and a fun night out.
Along the Mae Ping Riverside, cozy restaurants feature live musicians while people relax over dinner.
And if you visit the famous Night Bazaar on Changklan Road, you’ll often find traditional Thai dancing, local performers and small pubs with live music all within a short walk.
Chiang Mai is also home to many music schools, from the Yamaha School of Music to countless private teachers helping inspire the next generation of musicians.
That’s what surprised me most about Chiang Mai.
It’s a city where centuries-old traditions and today’s music scene exist together so naturally…
And somehow, it all feels perfectly at home.
I’m Tess with JRok Music.
I’ll see you in the next story.
