Everybody knows karaoke, but discovering a live band waiting for singers was something I never expected. It turned into one of my favorite music surprises in Japan.

Everybody knows karaoke.
But I never expected to walk into a bar where the karaoke came with a live rock band.
Most people know karaoke began in Japan.
Back in the early 1970s, musician Daisuke Inoue created one of the first karaoke machines in Kobe after realizing musicians weren’t always available to accompany singers.
One Friday evening, just as the sun was beginning to disappear behind the Osaka skyline, I was wandering through Shinsaibashi when I noticed a sandwich board outside a building.
It simply said “Karaoke Band,” with a glowing red arrow pointing upstairs.
I stopped for a second and thought.
What exactly is a Karaoke Band? So I walked upstairs.
Inside was a real four-piece band tuning their instruments and getting ready for the night’s singers.
Anyone could choose a song, walk onto the stage and perform live with the band.
For a few unforgettable minutes, the lights came on, the band kicked in, and you became the star of the show.
I thought that was such a fun idea.
Then, just last April, I found another one in Umeda.
Now I’m wondering.
Is this an Osaka thing, or are these places all over Japan?

But somehow, singing with a real live band takes that experience to a whole new level.
